Hi gang:
A few months ago we switched the group from a limit of 12 per meetup down to 6. It had the desired effect: a consistently good, managable, fun conversation for those who come.
The downside (duh) is that only 6 people can make it each month, which I admit is lame.
Here's why I've resisted (despite valid complaints from Will and others):
The Socrates cafe model is based on facilitation. Someone has to be the gentle moderator, generating the topic list, introducing people, keeping the vibe friendly and open, and bringing the conversation back to the Socratic model when things get heated or too personal. (For those laughing - yes, this is what I'm supposed to be doing at these things).
If I know folks are willing to step up if the need arises, I'm happy to make the meetup larger, and split up as necessary to keep the sizes right.
So if you're willing to lead a discussion should the need arise, speak up. If I get a bunch of folks I'll open up the size. (Bonus points if you're read the Socrates Cafe book).
Make sense? Feel free to reply all to the mailing list if you have opinions on this, or other aspects on this meetup. Cheers,
-Scott
